4th of July

Happy birthday 'merica!

We had a lovely & relaxing day!  In the morning I went to the driving range with James.  Apparently my Dad has spoiled me with Top Golf.  I asked if this place had margaritas & I got a weird look.  Oh well :)

Bucket of balls & a beautiful day!

I took a few swings myself!!

In the afternoon we went downtown for Fair St. Louis.  This is my first year in STL where 4th of July has not been 100 degrees & 100% humidity.  (remember the Cards game last year friends??)  Fair St. Louis is pretty awesome, there are food vendors, air show, concerts & a mega firework show all at the park under the Arch at the riverfront.  I think a million people go every year!  If you saw my Instagram already sorry for the repeats :)

The concert this year was Trace Adkins

Yep.  We're VIP's.

Fireworks under the arch!  Spectacular as always :)

Goodies

Nothing makes me more excited than coming home to find UPS deliveries :)  Maybe having 3!!!  I almost feel like it's wedding time again :)

My excitement was almost dampened by James seeing all of them when we arrived home from Florida... I got the "why did they get delivered when we were out of town?" talk followed by the "why did you need to order three packages?" talk.  Tell me I need to clean my car & I'll start seeing my dad's face.  Obviously I need better planning next time.  Challenge accepted.

Birchbox !!!
Love me some Birchbox.  This month was themed "little tweaks" to living healthy.  I think my favorite part was a 6 month subscription to Women's Health magazine!  And I'm super excited about the eye cream, for some reason (who am I kidding? let's blame my big veins & thin eye lids) I am having bad dark circles & my favorite Kate Sommerville is on E.  This one is StriVectin-SD Eye Concentrate & it's half an ounce.  On the downside, I didn't realize I had to worry about anti-aging hair care products!!!  Now I guess I do after receiving Nexxus Youth Renewal anti-aging elixir.  I can't have old looking hair!!!

Sephora !!
I have been dying to try Wen forever (especially after watching the infomercial James mocked me for recording) and had heard bad things about ordering online (like they sign you up for automatic refills, no thank you) and was excited when I realized Sephora sells it!  Furthering my quest for the perfect dry shampoo I decided to also try Drybar Detox Dry Shampoo.  It got awesome reviews.  I really wanted the Southern Belle Volume mousse because the name was fabulous, but it didn't get good reviews.  Sad day!  I also got some samples I'm excited about, more from Drybar, Origins, Bumble & Bumble.

Silver Superstore !!
I have been dying to get some more things monogrammed around here, when I was drowned by Southern Living's pinterest, magazine, blog, etc. everything Derby I realized that silver mint julep cups were the perfect hand-me-down item to monogram!!!  It is also very difficult to photograph a silver monogrammed cup.  Sigh.

Easter Sunday

Easter Sunday always makes me miss Mamma Kay.  This is her favorite holiday & she is the queen of Easter baskets!!!

On a bright note ~ it was in the 60s! And sunny!  Truly an Easter miracle :)  Unfortunately I didn't get a picture of James & I after church...  but I got to wear a silk dress, nude heels & NO TIGHTS!  Can I get an AMEN?

Easter tulips!   Should have taken the photo Saturday, but still pretty :)

My own "Easter Basket" aka 3 Reese's Eggs from the grocery store :)  I should have bought 300!

Happy Easter & time of celebrating our Lord to each of you!

St. Patrick's Day

James & I got very lucky for St. Patrick's Day, a new couple to our church invited us to a Blues game!  I am not the biggest hockey fan, but I do love a good fight :)  We had really good seats & the Blues won.  And we played the Ducks (many movie quotes).

I've decided hockey fans are just Nascar fans with a different accent & a little more clothes...

Action shot!  I've never sat this close to the glass!

This was my favorite part!  Between periods there were baby hockey players!!!  Too cute :)

 Goal!!!  Let's Go Blues!!!

Blues win!! 2-1 in OT

WHY do I occasionally try the side-part???  When will I learn???

New Stationery

I just love love love getting new things in the mail!  Call me old fashioned but something pretty via snail mail will always have a special place in my heart :)

During a recent office organization I realized my stationery box was dangerously depleted!  Understandable given wedding took over the last year and a half of my life.  I was only buying thank you cards!

The cards I added to my collection are from Ashley Brook Designs!  I love everything she does!!!

I hear a lot of ladies wishing they could be better about sending cards, the answer is simpler than you think.  They key to incorporating any new habit in your life is proximity.  If you want to eat healthy but stock no food in your fridge, you'll be heading to Chick-fil-a way more often than if you have a fridge stocked with veggies.  If you want to send cards keep some around the house!

My stationery collection is in a Library Office Storage Box from Container Store (plum of course!), it includes various cards, my favorite pen, stamps & address labels.  When I want to send a card it takes less than 5 minutes to open the box, write the card & get it ready to mail.   Right now I have the free tacky address labels from some non-profit, I have been meaning to update my monogram return address stamp with my new initials! :)

If you're new to creating a stationery collection I would suggest buying a box with lots of different cards inside.  I love this Kate Spade All Occasion Note Cards Gift Set from Papyrus ($35).   It comes with Congratulations, Happy Birthday, Get Well Soon, Hello & Thank You.  This would be perfect to keep on your desk, when the occasion arises it only takes a few minutes to write a quick note.

Or if you'd prefer to create it gradually many stores sell boxes of cards, like this cute Animal Print Boxed Thank You Cards from Target ($6).   Each time you go to Target you could grab one set of cards to gradually add to your collection.

If you are super crafty like my dear friend Elizabeth you can make your own cards!  Directions not found on this blog!!!  :)

Probably the most cost effective way is to buy a box of blank cards, then you can write any message you would like inside.  Café Chairs Note by Crane ($19).

For personalized notes there are great options from Etsy (very reasonable) or a stationery store, just depends on how much you'd like to spend.  Monogrammed Personalized Stationery Cards on Etsy ($18) or Personal Stationery Set also on Etsy ($15).

Another easy strategy (although more expensive) is to pick out cards for each individual occasion.  Or if you have specific people you want to buy an individualized car for this works well too.  When I am in Target, CVS, or the grocery store I always stop by the card aisle for a minute to ask myself two questions:
1)  What holidays are they featuring?
2)  Who's birthday is coming up in the next month?

Right now in Target I see St. Patricks Day, Easter Cards, my Dad's birthday is in March & the V-Day cards are on sale!  I will look through & pick an Easter card for my parents, a birthday card for my Dad & the formerly expensive Papryrus V-Day card with the hot sauce bottle on the front for next year :)  I will go home & add these to the stationery box.  When it is a few days until Dad's birthday I don't have to make a special trip to the store, I have his card already in my stationery box.

If you'd like tips for how to write thank you notes (I am forced to write this on a post it every time James needs to write a thank you) here is a great article from Southern Living (who else?) How to Write a Charming Thank You Note.

Valentine's Day

So basically I am in LOVE with Valentines' Day!  I always have been.  And no m'am I was not one of those girls who always had a boyfriend on V-Day.  Quite the opposite.  I think I was single most of them.  I know the people who like to wear black & label it as "Hallmark Capitalism" ~ boycotting a happy holiday seems very emotionally stable...  I just feel that a day dedicated to telling everyone in your life you care about them is awesome.  To me Val Day isn't about romantic love ~ it's about all love.

Put your phone down, stop the tweeting, tell people you love them today.

I love you ~  to my dear family & wonderful friends.  You bring joy to my life, and I love you.

I also love STEAK so I was wonderfully pleased by James' choice of restaurant Ruth's Chris!!!!

And now to the dress decision!

Drum roll please.....................................

I picked the Kate V Dress by Nicole Miller!!!

Inspired by one of my favorite fashionistas, the one and only Kate Middleton!

Ruth's Chris had a photographer to document the evening.

I was tempted to write a letter to Ruth's Chris management.  Maybe include a little education in the form of a syllogism:

Major Premise:  Valentine's Day dates are made to please women.
Minor Premise:  Women hate looking larger than they are on film.
Conclusion:  Fish eye lenses are the worst possible choice for Valentines Day.

James contributed some beautiful flowers & I contributed some yummy dessert!

Hope you had a fabulous day full of love!

Rent the Runway

Thanks to Birchbox December I received a $50 gift card to Rent the Runway.  I decided to use it for Valentine's Day!  I made it very clear to James (basically since December) that his only responsibility on V-Day was to take me to a restaurant nice enough to wear my RTR dress.

Like Mamma Kay says, if you don't tell men exactly what you want you're not likely to get it ;)

The whole process is very easy to use & very user-friendly.   On their website you select your event date, size & start browsing dresses available.   If it's your first time renting a designer they give you a complimentary second size!  And your second dress is $25.   You can also rent accessories, purses & buy Spanx!  You can rent for 4 or 8 days, included is a postage paid envelop to return them.  They also send you a reminder email when it's time to mail it back :)

I ordered two dresses, they came on time & I was VERY impressed with the overall presentation!

You get to keep the garment bag!  How fun :)

Included were a couple of freebies, from Olay & some Hollywood Fashion tape!

Left Dress:                                                                                                                              Right Dress:
Kate Lace V Dress by Nicole Miller                             Sapphire Sophisticate Dress by Christian Siriano

Which one to choose??????   Stay tuned for my Val-Day post!!!!

Chicago Christmas

This year we had great time with James' family in Chicago for christmas! We were spoiled rotten with wonderful presents, food & family!  (And my personal favorite- Christmas morning mimosas!!!!!)

I am still trying to figure out all the settings on my camera... So my pictures were partially in focus & partially blurry as everyone was ripping open presents!  :)

Here are some of my favorites...

Does Santa look familiar to you??

Wonder what my big present is?

Yay! I can't sit still enough for the picture! Yay Wellies!

James' big present... some UCF stuff :)

Christmas morning!  (on my second mimosa)  The best pic of us, even though it is fuzzy :)

Sneak Attack

Guess who didn't realize it was Christmas?  Me!

I was scanning through Facebook on Monday and saw a friend's post "I can't believe Christmas is next week." and I thought "She means week after next."  Nope.

Luckily I had a head start on some Christmas presents & my tree up.  But it was a mad dash the last few days to get everything ready!

Here is our tree!

I had some goodies come in the mail!!!  Definitely helped cheer up an old sick gal!
Upper left:  3 new pilates videos
Upper right: Glossybox
Bottom: Birchbox

Time to get some laundry done before our trip to Chicago!!

Santa Baby

Here are the gifts topping my Christmas wish list!!!  Especially after James surprised me with a fab jewelry box I need to fill it up! :)

1.  Tall Wellington Boot by Hunter in Aubergine

2.  Crystal Stud Big Pink Earrings from Etsy

3.  Personalized Stationery from Etsy

4.  Monogrammed Necklace from Etsy

5.  Louis Vuitton Cosmetic Pouch in Damier Azur

So my love of Etsy dominated my Christmas list this year.  I doubt I'll see any of these lovelies as James asked me a few weeks ago very confused, "So... are any of your presents actually in a store?"   My bet's on the wellies :)  I wonder how James is adjusting to married life, I took him to a *store* (Nordstrom) to see them in person & when the sales associate explained he just had to get the sock liners his face was priceless :)

Christmas at the Symphony

James & went to the Sunday matinee of the St. Louis Symphony performing Handel's Messiah.   It was lovely & Christmasy.  I loved seeing Powell Hall all decorated up :)  It was beautiful!!

It has been many many years since I've seen Messiah in person.  I love the Symphony!!!  I remembered the choral parts being beautiful and written very close to scripture.  It was such a beautiful experience because scripture was printed in the program & as your reading the gorgeous music is amplifying the beauty of the season.  I did not remember the soloists who sang straight up Opera style.  They were not my favorite.  Especially when James decided to speak in opera vibrato all night....

AND ~  I almost forgot!!  The conductor was the same conductor at Will & Kate's wedding!! I felt so royal!   All I was lacking was a nice fur :)  (and perhaps a castle or two).

As you may or may not be able to tell James was less than thrilled at my surprise photo shoot while driving :)  I asked a lady to take our picture during intermission on the big staircase.  She promptly ran to the bottom of the staircase & yelled up "I'll take your picture from down here so you look really tall!"...  Because that's a problem I often have... not looking tall enough.  I wish more people knew about flattering photo angles!
